DNA - Translation Flashcards
1
Q
translation
A
- the decoding of an mRNA message into a polypeptide chain
- aka: protein synthesis
2
Q
where does it happen?
A
- tales places on the ribosomes
- mRNA is transcribed in the nucleus, then enters the cytoplasm and attaches to a ribosome
3
Q
the role of tRNA
A
- the mRNA molecule moves through the ribosome and the tRNA molecule ‘translates” the codon and brings the proper amino acid
- the part that reads the codons are called anticodons
- the amino acid is added to the growing polypeptide chain
4
Q
start and stop codons
A
- tells the tRNA molecule where to start and stop translating
- AUG - start codon
- UAA, UAG, UGA - stop codons
- release the finished chains into the cell to do its job
5
Q
anticodon
A
- group of three bases on a tRNA molecule that are complementary to an mRNA codon
- anticodon tells the tRNA molecule where to attach itself
