Cell Division - Reasons for Cell Division Flashcards

Q
Reasons for cell division
A
- DNA overload:
- The cell becomes too large for the DNA to handle.
- There is only enough DNA to regulate a cell of a certain size.
- Exchange rate of materials:
- Food and water enter a cell and waste products leave - through the cell membrane.
- This rate of exchange is dependent on the cell’s surface area to volume ratio.
- As something becomes bigger the surface area of the cell gets smaller in respect to the size.
