GA: Oral Cavity + Pharynges Flashcards
What is the purpose of the soft palate?
Forms posterior 1/3 of mouth, helps close of nasopharynx when swallowing
Where do the palatine tonsils live?
Between the glossopalatine + pharyngopalatine arches in mouth
What are the 3 salivary glands?
Parotid (largest)
Submandibular (produces most saliva)
Sublingual

Teeth (gomphosis joint)

We have 32 teeth
(before permanent = 20 deciduous teeth)

What are the 3 phases of swallowing?

What innervates tensor veli palatini?
What innervates levator veli palatini?
tensor = CN V3
levator = CN X

What does vagus nerve split into?
Pharyngeal (top)
Superior Laryngeal (bottom)
Reccurent laryngeal (bottom to top)

What forms long bones?
Endochondral ossification: bone formation occurs in preexisting cartilaginous models
Brain surround by:
Face surrounded by:
Neurocranium
Viscerocranium
The membranous part of the neurocranium =
calvaria (frontal + parietal bones)
sutures
Where do the pharyngeal arches come from?
Cartilaginous viscerocranium
What is craniosyntosis?
Premature fusion of cranial sutures
What is scaphocephaly?
Premature closure of sagittal suture
What is brachycephaly?
Premature closure of coronal suture
What is plagiocephaly?
Premature closure of cornoal suture on one side
What is trigonocephaly?
Premature closure of frontal suture
How are the facial primordia separated from the pharynx?
By a bilaminar membrane: orophayngeal membrnae
As the median nasal prominences merge what do they form that contributes to the philtrum of the upper lip?
Intermaxillary segment
What pharyngeal arch forms the facial muscles?
PA2
(PA1 = muscles of mastication)
What are the openings from the nasal cavity to the nasal pharynx called?
Primordial choanae
What forms a cleft palate/cleft lip?
Primordia don’t fuse properly
Occurs in weeks 9-12
Hypopharyngeal eminence?

Teeth development from reciprocal inductions between neural crest induced mesencyme + epithelium is called?
Odontogenesis
There are 10 tooth buds
What is the cap stage of tooth development?
Has enamel organ, dental papilla, + dental sac
Next = bell stage –> odontoblasts + dentin
As a permanent tooth grows, what resorbs the deciduous root?
When do permanent teeth begin to erupt?
Osteoclasts
6 yrs old
When do deciduous teeth appear?
10 weeks
