GA: Cranial Nerves + Autonomics Flashcards
What are the parasympathetic GVE:
SLUDD: Salivation, Lacrimation, Urination, Digestion, Defecation
Edinger-Westphal nucleus (CN 3)
Sup. Salivary (CN 7)
Inf. Salivary (CN 9)
Dorsal Vagus (CN 10)
Look at deep blue
General Visceral Efferents (Visceral Motor GVE) = parasympathetics
Sympathetic fibers are ____ganglionic and come from the ___________.
post = sym
superior cervical ganglion
*deep petrosal nerve = only symp. nerve of importance*
______ganglionic parasympathetic fibers arise from ______ and synapse @ 4 ganglia in the head ______,_______,_______,__________.
Pre = para
They arise from nuclei in the brain stem and then synapse at 4 ganglia in the head (ciliary, pterygopalatine, otic, and submandibular)
What CN’s carry preganglionic parasympathetics?
3 (oculomotor), 7(facial), 9(GP), 10 (vagus)
*after they synapse they hop on trigeminal nerve to get to their destination, but trigeminal does not actually carry parasym*
Where do sympathetics go to innervate the head?
Superior cervical ganglion –>
1) Deep Petrosal N. –> B.V.’s + Sweat glands
2) External Carotid A. Plexus + Facial A. Plexus –> vasomotor innervation
What is Horners Syndrome?
The absence of sympathetically stimulated functions on the ipsilateral side of the head.
Have you met PAM Horner? She is very sympathetic!
Ptosis = eye droopy
Miosis = pupil constriction
Anhydrosis = no sweating
What nerves do the parasympathetics jump onto to carry their fibers all over the face?
Trigeminal N. (CN V)
What branches of the Opthalamic (V1) piggyback parasympathetics?
Lacrimal + Short ciliary (go to eye)
What branches of maxillary V2 piggyback parasympathetics?
Zygomatic, Nasociliary (nose), Greater + Lesser Palatine, Posterior Superior nasal (palate)
What branches of the mandibular (V3) piggyback preganglionic parasympathetics?
Lingual - salivary glands
Auriculotemporal - parotid gland
Which branches of the trigeminal carry which branches of the preganglionic parasympathetics?
V1 - ciliary ganglion (CN 3 synapses)
V2- pterygopalatine ganglion (CN 5 + 7)
V3 - submandibular( 5 + 7) + otic ganglion (10)
How do you make tears? (pathway w/ facial N.)
What innervates the parotid (salivary) gland?
Glossopharyngeal N. (9)
Tympanic plexus –> lesser petrosal –> parotid gland
