Id
pleasure/gratification (unconscious)
- Aman wants coffee, Hayley has coffee, kill Hayley, get coffee
The id seeks to discharge tension arising from internal needs or external stimulation. It is made up of all instincts and wants to get rid of all uncomfortable feelings
Ego
reality (conscious/unconscious)
- resolves conflict between the id and superego
- actual constraints you have
- no, no, going to get in trouble
Mediates the demands of reality vs. the desires of the Id. The self. This is who we identify with/believe ourselves to be.
Superego
higher sense of moral order (conscious/unconscious)
- parents watching over you
- demands performance to highest standard
- like your conscience in your head
- I know it’s not right
Oral Stage
• 0-1 years
• dependent, seek comfort, need mommy
Oral character: passive, dependent
- when don’t master this stage, get stuck here
- momma’s boy
Anal Stage
• 1-3 years
• poop wherever you want BUT adults tell you where
- toilet training, where to poop
Anal character: anal retentive, meticulous, exacting precise
Phallic Stage
• 3-6 years
• Oedipus / Elektra Complex
- little boy likes mommy, can’t have mommy because dada in the way
Sexual dysfunction
Latency

• 6-12 years
- repress sexual, no libido
- befriend dada
No adult fixation
Genital Stage
• 12-13+ years
- hook up with someone like mommy
- sexually matured, find opposite sex

• Freud -> represent unconscious feelings/thoughts
- manifest content: actual dream
- latent content: underlying meaning (subconscious)
