Schizophrenia
- break from reality (psychosis) “disorganized thought”
• Dopamine-Serotonin-Hypothesis - regulation of dopamine -> positive symptoms
- regulation of serotonin -> negative symptoms
Types:
1) paranoid ➕ (everyone out to get you)
2) disorganized (symptoms range all across schizophrenia)
3) catatonic (frozen, don’t feel anything)
Positive symptoms
positive = add stuff
1) hallucinations -> perceptions that aren’t real
2) delusions -> thoughts that aren’t real
Negative symptoms
negative = take away stuff
1) lack of affect (emotions) (don’t convey them)
2) lack of social interaction
Anxiety Disorders
1) GAD -> generalized anxiety disorder
2) phobia -> irrational fear
3) panic disorder -> panic attack
4) PTSD
5) OCD -> obsessive compulsive disorder
intrusive thoughts rituals
- perform ritual to get rid of thought
Mood Disorders
abnormally long periods of sadness
1) major depression: at least 2 weeks, 5 symptoms
2) SAD -> seasonal affective disorder

3) bipolar (manic-depressive)
Bipolar Disorder
1) Bipolar I disorder: manic episode
(doesn’t require depression)
2) Bipolar II disorder: hypomania + a major depression
Personality Disorder
• Cluster A: paranoid, schizoid, schizotypal
- A is first because paranoid
• Cluster B: antisocial, borderline, histrionic, narcissist (center of attention, manipulative)
- B: center letter -> center of attention
• Cluster C: avoidant, dependent
Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder
- C: clingy, control
Narcissist vs. Borderline Personality Disorder
- Narcissistic: full of yourself
- need people to manipulate/tell you how great you are - Borderline: difficult to deal with
- need a friend: don’t leave me alone (moody, unpredictable)
Dissociative Disorders
distress/disability from abnormalities of identity or memory
- Dissociative Identity Disorder (Multiple Personality Disorder)
- Dissociative Fugue: do something bad -> dissociate -> few hours later realize what you did (Ex: Halle Barry)
Illness Anxiety Disorder
(think) fear that you have a disease
- hypochondriac
Somatic symptom disorder
- have real symptoms but not from disease
- causes functional impairments -> stops you from going to school
Conversion Disorder
- blind/numb arm -> stressful exam over -> symptoms go away
