forensics - psychological - psychodynamic Flashcards
who is the founder of the psychodynamic approach?
FREUD
for freud what is human behaviour governed by?
unconcious conflict that is rooted in childhood
describe the superego
- develops at phallic stage
- morality principle
- moral stance of same sex parent
-punishes ego for wrong doings
what is the phallic stage?
3-6 years
odeipus and electra complex
who assimilated freuds psychology to crime?
Blackburn
what causes criminal behaviour for blackburn?
an inadequet superego
what is the inadequete superego?
- defficient
- doesnt punish ego
what is the concequence of inadequete superego?
the id is given free reign and not properly controlled so criminal behaviour is inevitable
what are the types of inadequete supergo?
the weak superego
over-harsh SE
Deviant SE
what is the weak superego?
if same sex parent is not present at phallic stage child cannot internalise their moral code and cannot identify with them. so criminal behaviour is more likeley
what is the deviant supergo?
if the internalised behaviour is immoral theyre more likely to be immoral for example, through parenting etc
what is over harsh superego?
crippled by guilt and anxiet that means they subconciously comit crime to punish supergo
what else causes crime?
maternal deprivation
Evaluate psychodynamic explanation for criminality
- methodological issues with bowlbys 44 thieves study
- lack of falsibibiliy - cannot be tested - always an instance that it is true
- correlation doesnt mean causation - materal deprivation doesnt = criminal could be other reasons for example genetics or nervous system
- freud implictly suggests females should commit crime than males but this is not true
- contradictory evidence - criminal parents could be genetics also absent ame sex parent doesnt mean criminal
alternative explanations
alternative explanations
what topics in psychology is this theory based on and should be explained in an A01
freud - psychodynamic approach
- bowlbys - maternal deprivation - attachment
