Force Field Analysis Theory - Lewin Flashcards
What is a Force Field Analysis?
a visual outline of the driving and restraining forces for business change
aims to identify and justify reasons for change
What’s a driving force?
a force or motivation that supports business changes
(general community, stakeholders, competitors, profit)
What is a restraining force?
a force or motivation that resists business change
(stakeholders, time, resources, inertia)
Benefits of FFA
businesses can see pros and cons an determine if change is worth it
can determine time and resources needed
can plan how to remove restraints
visual aid for stakeholders to determine how they feel (lessen resistance)
can identify restraining skills and what training is required
identifies who supports and resists change
Limitations of FFA
not all forces are easy to identify, and can emerge later in the process of change
weighing forces are subjective and biases can form when determining importance of forces
timelines can’t consider emergencies or unexpected events
delegating responsibilities to ppl may result in needed training as people may not be able to manage the workload
What are the key principals of an FFA?
Identify driving forces
Identify restraining forces
Weigh up and score forces
Action plan
What is an action plan?
the driving forces are lsisted on one side, restraining on the other
they are numbered by importance
this helps identify if change is worth it and prioritises fixing biggest restraints
