Foot Positioning Flashcards
What IR is used for foot views?
10x12
What SID is used for foot views?
40”
What structures are seen for a dorsoplantar AP/AP axial foot?
- AP projection of entire foot
- All tarsals distal to the talus, metatarsals, & phalanges
- Use of angle opens tarsal articulations
- Overlap the 2nd-5th metatarsal bases
- Open joint space between the medial and intermediate cuneiforms
How is the patient positioned for a dorsoplantar AP/AP axial foot?
- Patient is supine or sitting on table
- Bend patients knee & place foot flat on surface of IR
Where is the CR for a dorsoplantar AP/AP axial foot?
Entering at base of 3rd metarsal
At what angle is the CR for a dorsoplantar AP/AP axial foot?
Either 0 or 10 degrees
What structures are seen for a 30-degree medial oblique foot?
- Oblique projection of entire foot
- Sinus tarsi best seen
- Tuberosity of 5th metatarsal well visualised
- 3rd-5th metatarsal bases free of superimposition
How is the patient positioned for a 30-degree medial oblique foot?
- Begin in AP position
- Rotate foot medially
- Plantar surface of foot should form a 30-degree angle with IR
Where is the CR for a 30-degree medial oblique foot?
Perpendicular to base of 3rd metatarsal
What would a 30-degree lateral oblique be used to demonstrate?
1st & 2nd metatarsal bases
What views is used to demonstrate the 1st & 2nd metatarsal bases?
30-degree lateral oblique
What are the structures seen for a mediolateral foot?
- Lateral projection of foot & ankle
- Include distal tib-fib articulation
- Demonstrates anterior or posterior displacements of fracture or foreign bodies
- Tibiotalar joints are seen
- Fibula overlapping posterior portion of tibia
How is the patient positioned for a mediolateral foot?
- Begin in AP
- Then roll patient up onto hip of affected side
- Flex knee so foot is lateral and parallel to IR
- Dorsiflex foot 90-degrees
Where is the plantar surface for a mediolateral foot?
Perpendicular to IR
Where is the CR for a mediolateral foot?
Perpendicular at the level of the base of 3rd metatarsal
What view do you see an overlap of the 2nd-5th metatarsal bases?
Dorsoplantar AP/AP axial
What view do you see an oblique projection of the entire foot?
30-degree medial oblique
What view do you see the tibiotalar joint?
Mediolateral foot
What view do you see the open joint space between the medial and intermediate cuneiforms?
Dorsoplantar AP/AP axial
In what view is the sinus tarsi best seen?
30-degree medial oblique
What view is the fibula overlapping the posterior portion of the tibia?
Mediolateral foot
In what view is the tuberosity of the 5th metatarsal well visualized?
30-degree medial oblique
In what view is the 3rd-5th metatarsal bases free of superimposition?
30-degree medial oblique
In what view is the foot in a true AP?
Dorsoplantar AP/AP axial
What view do you see the foot & ankle in a lateral position?
Mediolateral foot
In what view are all the tarsals distal to the talus, metatarsals, and phalanges?
Dorsoplantar AP/AP axial
In what view do you see distal tib-fib articulation?
Mediolateral foot
In what view can the use of an angle open the tarsal articulations?
Dorsoplantar AP/AP axial
Which view demonstrates anterior or posterior displacements of fractures or foreign bodies?
Mediolateral foot
