Flabby Ridge Flashcards
Where are flabby ridges usually seen?
IT CAN appear Upper anterior where it has been opposed by natural teeth
Aka Combination syndrome
What is a flabby ridge?
This is a ridge that becomes displaced due to fibrous tissue deposit
What are the three ways to manage a flabby ridge?
Surgery
Window
Selective displacement
When is surgery used?
This is when the fibrous tissue is removed to leave a firm ridge
What are the problems with surgery technqiue?
- Reduces amount of fibrous tissue Which reduce height of ridge and therefore reduces stability
- Increases denture bulk
3 traumatic to oateint - Trauma to underlying bone since flabby tissue acted as shock absorber
What is the window technique?
This is a mucostatic impression technique
- Customised close fitting special tray with window over flabby ridge
- Impression in ZnO eugenol or silicone leaving window over flabby ridge
- Once this set use a mucostatic impression technqiue to record the flabby ridge area
What is the selective displacement technqiue?
Muscodisplacive: displace but not distort flabby ridge
- Special tray loaded with impression compound and take impression of the model
- Try impression in mouth: should be retentive
- Remove and then warm all over except in flabby ridge area
- Re take impression: this means that the flabby ridge is displaced as the warm areas sink into the tissue
- Can then consider wash impression on top to increase detail
With the mucodisplasive techqniue, when will the denture be most stable?
Under load
With the mucostatic technique , when is the denture most stable?
When not loaded
