Exercise 08: Coagulation Testing Flashcards
Complex process where blood started to form clots.
Coagulation / Clotting
A test that measures blood’s ability to clot, and how long it takes to clot.
Coagulation Test
Four (4) Factors that affect Coagulation / Clotting
- Genes
- Medications
- Diseases
- Current Medical Condition and Lifestyle
Group of tests that evaluate the cells that circulate in blood, including RBCs, WBCs, and PLTs.
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
The normal platelet count ranges from __________.
150,000 to 450,000
It is the time required for the plasma to clot after an excess of thromboplastin and an optimal concentration of calcium have been added.
Prothrombin Time
Normal Range of Prothrombin Time (PT)
10 to 15 seconds
A PT test measures how long it takes for the clot to form in the blood sample. An INR is the type of calculation based on PT test results.
PT-INR Tests
(T/F): INR levels that are too low, at risk for dangerous blood clots.
T
(T/F): INR levels that are too high, are at risk for dangerous bleeding.
T
If PT or INR is slightly elevated, withhold warfarin for __________, then reinstitute therapy with reduced dosage.
24 to 48 hours
If PT or INR is elevated and bleeding occurs, administer __________ over 30 minutes. Patients who are bleeding may require the administration of blood products that contain clotting factors.
10 mg of Phytonadione
It measures how long it takes your blood to form clot.
Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT) Test
Normal Range of Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT) Test
21 to 35 seconds
Three (3) Methods to Determine Blood Clotting Using Whole Blood
- Slide Method / Milian’s Slide Method
- Capillary Tube Method / Wright’s Method
- Test Tube Method / Lee-White Method
A method modified by Hinman and Sladen. The only apparatus required is the microscope slide.
Slide Method / Milian’s Slide Method
Clotting Time Range of Slide Method / Milian’s Slide Method
4 to 10 minutes
It could be by means of breaking the capillary tube or blowing the tubes.
Capillary Tube Method / Wright’s Method
In which several glass tubes of narrow bore are filled with the same amounts of blood, and the time determined when the blood cannot be blown from the tube, or if blown out onto filter paper shows clot.
Wright’s Method
A finger-stick blood sampler that is used to obtain blood for testing blood sugar (glucose).
Lancet
It was used to monitor the heparin therapy, but now it is replaced by the APTT.
Test Tube Method / Lee-White Method
Device that measure the clotting mechanisms of hemostasis.
Coagulation Analyzer
It uses blood viscosity changes to determine clotting time.
Mechanical Impedance
Monitor changes in the specimen’s optical density to detect the beginning of clot formation.
Photometric Principle
