Exercise 06: Cholinergic Agonists and Antagonists Flashcards
Two (2) Drugs Samples Used in this Exercise
- Pilocarpine Hydrochloride
- Atropine Sulfate
Constricted (Miosis) pupil after the application of __________ ophthalmic solution.
Pilocarpine
Dilated (Mydriasis) pupil after the application of __________ ophthalmic solution.
Atropine
Cholinergic Agonist
Pilocarpine
From the Leaves of Pilocarpus jaborandi. Action: Muscarinic Action similar to Ach. It can be use for Glaucoma (Narrow and Open Angle / Close and Wide Angle). It stimulates M3 in the Pupil Miosis → Drains Aqueous Humor and Decreases Ocular Pressure.
Pilocarpine
(T/F): Pilocarpine is extremely effective in opening the trabecular meshwork around Schlemm’s canal, causing an immediate drop in intraocular pressure as a result of the increased drainage of aqueous humor. This action occurs within a few minutes, lasts 4 to 8 hours, and can be repeated.
T
Cholinergic Antagonist
Atropine
Found in Atropa belladonna or deadly night shade or in Datura stramonium or jimsonweed (Jamestown weed) or thorn apple. It causes reversible blockade of cholinomimetic actions at muscarinic receptors. When it binds to the muscarinic receptor, it prevents the actions of muscarinic agonists such as the release of IP3 & the inhibition of adenylyl cyclase.
