Exchange And Transport Flashcards
Why is a specialized system for gas exchange needed?
To get oxygen for respiration, remove co2 and increase diffusion rate
Why is co2 bad in the blood
Changed ph of blood so proteins denature
Factors that effect rate of diffision in human gas exchange
Blood supply ( creating steep conc gradient) ventilation, moist surfaces
What is the pleura
Space between the double membrane, filled with pleura fluid which lubicates lungs
Nasal cavity role in gas exchange
Blood warms air, mucus traps particles, humidifies air to protect more delicate structures in lungs
Trachea role in gas exchange
Funnels inhaled air to lungs and exhaled air out if body
External intercostal muscles during inspiration
Contract
External intercostal muscles during expiration
Relaxing (passive)
Internal intercostal muscles during inspiration
Relaxing
Internal inter costal muscles during expiration
Contracting
Diaphragm during inspiration
Contracts ( flattens)
Diaphragm during expiration
Relaxes ( curves )
Air pressure in lungs during inspiration
Decrease
Air pressure in lungs during expiration
Increases
Air movement along pressure gradient during inspiration
Into lungs (high to low)
