Exam 7 part 5 Flashcards
Habitat fragmentation
one of the most pervasive form of habitat degradation, breakup of large, contiguous areas of natural habitat into small isolated pieces
Why is habitat fragmentation concerning
reduce habitats to a size that is too small to support some species, reduces ability of individuals to disperse from one habitat to another (inbreeding depression, loss of alleles due to genetic drift) and creates edge habitat which have low biomass
exotic
non-native
invasive
damaging
Dominant threat to marine species
overexploitation
pollution
pharmaceuticals in human urine get in the water, greenhouse gases, pesticide and herbicides get magnified in the food chain, nutrient runoffs can cause eutrophication
Climate change makes
the oceans acidic, precipitation patterns change, severity of extreme weather, rising sea levels
Global warming
increase in the average temperature of the planet
global climate change
the sum of all the changes in the local temperature and precipitation patterns that result from global warming
Explain the greenhouse effect
solar radiation penetrates atmosphere, some is reflected out and some is absorbed warming the earth, heat is emitted as infrared radiation and is lost in space or retained in atmosphere warming it
Seed banks
provide long term storage and protect loss of genetic diversity
Ex situ conservation
reintroduction via the preservation of species in zoos, aquaria, ranches, and botanical gardens
Wildlife corridors
encourage gene flow and allow areas to be recolonized
ecotourism
assumes that local people and governments will profit more in the long term by tourism than in short term by activities like logging
