Exam 3 Vocab Flashcards
Endomysium
The endomysium, meaning within the muscle, is a wispy layer of areolar connective tissue that ensheaths each individual muscle fiber, or muscle cell.
Epimysium
is the fibrous tissue envelope that surrounds skeletal muscle
Fascicle
Each fascicle (or fasciculus) is a bundle of muscle fibers, also called myocytes, bound together via the endomysium tissue that provides pathways for the passage of blood vessels and nerves.
Myocytes
The muscle cell, also known as the myocyte is the smallest subunit of all muscular tissues and organs throughout the body
Fiber
Each bundle of muscle fiber is called a fasciculus and is surrounded by a layer of connective tissue called the perimysium. Within the fasciculus, each individual muscle cell, called a muscle fiber, is surrounded by connective tissue called the endomysium.
Myofilament
Myofilaments are the three protein filaments of myofibrils in muscle cells. The main proteins involved are myosin, actin, and titin.
Myosins
are a superfamily of motor proteins best known for their roles in muscle contraction and in a wide range of other motility processes in eukaryotes. They are ATP-dependent and responsible for actin-based motility.
Actin
Actin is a family of globular multi-functional proteins that form microfilaments in the cytoskeleton, and the thin filaments in muscle fibrils
Striated muscle tissue
is a muscle tissue that features repeating functional units called sarcomeres. The presence of sarcomeres manifests as a series of bands visible along the muscle fibers, which is responsible for the striated appearance observed in microscopic images of this tissue.
2 types of striated muscles
Cardiac
Skeletal
Skeletal muscles
are organs of the vertebrate muscular system and typically are attached by tendons to bones of a skeleton. The muscle cells of skeletal muscles are much longer than in the other types of muscle tissue, and are often known as muscle fibers. The muscle tissue of a skeletal muscle is striated – having a striped appearance due to the arrangement of the sarcomeres.
sarcomere
A sarcomere the smallest functional unit of striated muscle tissue
Perimysium
the sheath of connective tissue surrounding a bundle of muscle fibers.
Sarcolemma
the fine transparent tubular sheath which envelops the fibers of skeletal muscles.
Sarcoplasm
the cytoplasm of striated muscle cells.
