Exam 1 Study guide (chapter 4 everything else) Flashcards
What do the nervous tissue do and where is it found?
Regulation and control of body functions.
Found in the Brain, spinal cord, & nerves
What are the 2 types of nervous tissue and what do they do?
- Neurons – Generate and conduct impulses
- Supporting cells- Non-conducting, support, insulation, protection
What are the 3 types of muscles
- Skeletal
- Cardiac
- Smooth
What are the 2 defining characteristics of muscles?
- voluntary vs involuntary & 2. Striated vs non striated
Voluntary: skeletal
Involuntary smooth, cardiac
Striated: skeletal & cardiac
Non striated: smooth
What are the 3 steps in tissue repair?
- Inflammation
- Organization
- Regeneration
Describe the process of inflammation in tissue repair?
- Dilation of capillaries
- Clots
- Scab dries due to exposure to air
Describe the steps in tissue repair in the organization phase?
- Granulation replaces clot
- Fibroblast produce growth hormones & new collagen to help bridge gap
Describe the steps in the regeneration phase of tissue repair?
- Macrophages clean up debris
- Surface epithelial grows under scab
- Fibrous tissue matures and contracts
- Regenerated epithelial resembles surrounding tissue
- Scar may be visible or invisible
Which tissues are better at repair (from good to bad)?
(best) 1. Epithelial, bone, areolar, dense irregular tissue
2. Smooth muscle, dense regular
3. Skeletal muscle, cartilage
(worst) 4. Cardiac & neurons
Cancer terms: benign
good
Cancer terms: malignant
bad
cancer terms: metastic
traveling
cancer terms: carcinogens
cancer causing agents
cancer terms: oncogenes
cancer causing genes
Cancer terms: tumor suppressing genes
Stop carcinogenes and aid in DNA repair
