Exam 3 Salivary Glands Tumors Flashcards
```
Where does most salivary glands disease affects?
The ductal and secretory components
Where does salivary glands originates from ?
Ectoderm
What are reactive lesions ?
- Injury or obstruction to ducts
- Duct blockage or severance leads to pooling of saliva in the tissue
- Can lead to mild chronic inflammation and fibrosis or sclerosis
What are Mucocele?
- Trauma causing severing of a minor salivary gland duct
- Also when secretions spill into connective tissue
What does mucocele forms?
Forms cyst like structure
What are the clinical appears of a mucocele? and what are its treatment?
- swelling that increases and decreases over time.
- Treatment involves surgical removal
What is Ranula?
- Term used for mucocele like lesion
- Is unilaterally on the floor of the mouth
Where are Ranula found?
- Duct of either the sublingual or submandibular glands has been severed or obstructed by a salivary stone
- Surgical removal
- Sweling of the floor of the mouth
Ranula
What is a mucous retention cyst?
- Swelling caused by an obstruction of a salivary Gland duct
- Cavity will fill with mucous
What is sialadenitis ?
- Development of Salivary stones lead to blockage
- Prolonged blockage can lead to necrosis
- More pain and swelling during meals
- Can create swelling like ranula
sialadenitis
Sialadenitis
Sialadenitis
What are the distinguishing features of benign and malignnt salivary gland tumors ?
Dome shape
Nodular Surface
Irregularly Shaped
What percentage of salivary glan tumors occur in the major glands and minor?
Major: 70
Minor: 30
Pleomorphic Adenoma
- Most common Salivary gland tumor
- Appears as a soft tissue swelling
- Associated with Parotid gland (Major)
- Associated with Palate (minor)
Pleomorphic Adenoma
(palate, minor)
Pleomorphic Adenoma
(parotid, major)
Monomorphic Adenoma
- Composed of a single epithelial cell type
- Parotid
- Adults
- Females
- Common sites: upper lip nd buccal mucosa.
- Smooth-surface mass
Basal Cell Adenoma
Monomorphic Adenoma
Basal cell in sheets or nests
Papillary Cystadenoma/ Warthin tumor
Monomorphic Adenoma
Lymphoid and epithelial cells seen but only the epithelial cells are neolastic
Onocytoma
Monomorphic Adenoma
Clusters of onocytes
