Exam 3 Odontogenic Flashcards
Epithelial Tumors
What is neoplasms?
A neoplasm is an abnormal growth of tissue benign or malignant.
Medical term used for tumors
What increases the risk of neoplasms?
Alcohol use and sun exposures
What are odontogenic tumors?
Neoplams that originate from the tissue responsible for tooth formation and the attachment apparatus of the periodontium
What are the epithelial tumors?
- Ameloblastoma
- Calcifying Epithelial Ondontogenic Tumor
- Calcifying cyst
- Adenomatoid Odontogenic Tumor
What is Ameloblastoma?
- Benign more common on mandible and posterior region.
- Most common age 20-40
- Occurs in both females and males
- Slow growing
- Expansion of bone
- Associated with Impacted tooth and Dentigerous cyst
- Lesions** resistant **to radiation and chemotherapy
- Do** NOT** tent to recur
Ameloblastoma
What is Calcifying Epithelial Odontogenic Tumor? (Pindborg Tumor)
- Benign
- Sheets of polyhedral cells
- Occurs in adults both F and M
- Occurs mostly in the Posterior Mandible region
- Asymptomatic and grows slowly while expanding the bone
CEOT/ Pindborg Tumor
What is Adenomatoid (AOT) ?
- Benign
- 70% in women under 20 years
- Common Malliary anterior
- Associated with an impacted Canine
- Asymptomatic swelling
- Encapsulated
Calcifying Cyst/ Gorlin Cyst
- Nonaggressive cystic lesion
- Occurs more common in people less than 40 years old
- Well defined Uni/multiocular calcifications
- Ghost Cells seen and calcifications can occur
Calcifying Cyst
What are the mesenchymal Tumors?
- Odontogenic Myxoma
- Central Cementifying and ossifying Fibromas
- Cementoblastoma
Odontogenic Myxoma
- Benign
- nonencapslated
- I0-29 yr olds
- multocular- honeycomb radiolucent poor margins
- may displace teeth
- Most common- mandible
Odontogenic Myxoma
Central Cementifying and ossifying Fibromas
- Benign
- Well Circumscribed
- 30-40 years old
- More common in females
- Mandible
Central Cementifying and ossifying Fibromas
Central Cementifying and ossifying Fibromas
Cementoblastoma
- Benign
- well defined
- seen in aprical 1/3 of the root
- Pain is associated with it
- Vital teeth
- occurs in the mandible molars/premolar areas
- adjacent roots can resorb
- More males and females
- younger than 25 years old
Cementoblastoma
Odontoma
- Benign tumor of Enamel, dentin ,cementum and pulp
- Compound: consists of a collection of small teeth
- Complex: Mass of tissue
- occurs in children and young adults more in males
- Located: Compound: Anterior maxillary, Complex: Posterior mandible
- lack of eruption and swelling
