autodigestion of pancreatic cells

direct toxic injury to cells-> activation and release of pancreatic enzymes into pancreas-> autodigestion of pancreatic tissues-> leads to edema, hemorrhage, necrosis and pseudocysts, pancreatic abscess
clinical mani of acute pancreatitis
acute midabdominal pain fever increased WBC nausea/vomiting hypotension leads to shock if lost lots of fluid
acute pancreatitis is usually
self limiting
how do they diagnose acute pancreatitis
clinical finding and history
serum amylase and lipase are up
chronic pancreatitis etiology
chronic alcohol abuse/addiction is the most common cause
clinical mani of chronic pancreatitis
- continuous/intermittent abd. pain- worse after meals
- steatorrhea (fatty stools)
- malabsorption of calories
- may become insulin dependent diabetic
management of chronic pancreatitits
no alcohol
replacement enzymes
pancreatic cancer mani
anorexia, weightloss, dull epigastric pain
risk factors for pancreatic cancer
smoker, drinkers, high fat eaters
liver cancer mani
weightloss, abdominal discomfort
liver cancer risk factors
from other cancer
hep B and C
alcohol use
cirrhosis
