When do ethical issues arises?
Arises when a conflict exists between the rights of pps in research studies + the goals of research to produce authentic + vaild data
Informed Consent
- makes pps aware of aims of research, procedures, rights + what data will be used for
- allows pps to make informed decisions but researchers may think it causes unnatural behaviour
Deception
deliberately misleading or withholding info from pps
- pps who haven’t received adequate information can’t give informed consent
- some occasions its justified if it causes pps distress
Protection from Harm
- pps shouldn’t be placed at any risk than in daily life both physical + psychological (embarrassment stress etc)
- also includes reminding pps they have right to withdraw
Privacy + confidentiality
- pps have right to control info about themselves
- confidentiality - right to have any personal data protected
- extends to area where study took place
BPS code of conduct
a quasi-legal document that instructs psychologists in uk about what behaviour is acceptable and not
=> implemented by ethical committees in research institutions
=> bulit around respect competence responsibility + integrity
Dealing w/ informed consent
Issue pps with a consent letter/ form to sign detailing all relevant info that might impact decision to partake
Dealing w/ deception + protection from harm
- pps given full debrief to be aware of true aims of investigation, how data is used + that their behaviour was normal
if pps were subject to stress can require counselling
Dealing with confidentiality
- no record of personal details => maintains anonymity
- in case studies intials used only
- standard practice that pps are reminded data is protected throughout process (not shared)
