What should you do before giving an injection?
clean injection site with isopropyl alcohol
What is the most common muscle to give an IM injection?
lateral cervical
How do you identify the lateral cervical muscle?
triangle made by nuchal ligament dorsally, the spine ventrally and the scapula caudally
Why would IM injections in the neck be contraindicated?
nursing foals - may become sore and reduce nursing
What muscle should you use in foals for IM injections?
semitendinosus
How do you locate the gluteal muscle?
one hand width lateral to spine, one hand width caudal to tuber coxae, one hand width dorsal to greater trochanter
Where should you stand when giving IM injection into the gluteal muscle?
stand beside flank facing caudally during injection
Other than sterilizing, what should be done before an injection?
use base of hand to firmly thump the skin 3-4x before inserting needle
Where are most IV injection given?
jugular vein
What is the most common location for SQ injections?
lateral aspect of neck
When are intradermal injection used?
tuberculosis test in cattle, skin allergy testing
What is catheter diameter based off of?
based on how rapidly the medication/fluid must be delivered
What is a 14g catheter for?
good general purpose catheter size –> maintenance fluids
What catheter materials are most commonly used?
teflon and polyurethane
What vein is most common for catheter placement?
jugular vein
