Geopolitical intervention
A
Exercise of a country’s power in order to influence course of events outside its borders split 4 areas: development aid, trade embargoes, military aid + military action (indirect+ direct)

Development aid (overseas aid/ Official Development Assistance (ODA)]
A
- financial aid given developing countries support long-term development (econ, Soc etc)
- most developed countries+ recorded ODA [by OECD Org Econ Co-op+ Develop] , IGO’s (EU, World Bank) also NGO’s
- aid: 1 country other (MOST) BILATERAL/ thru IGO MULTILATERAL
- 1970 UN General Assembly agreed commit 0.7% GNI (Most+ UK=0.7%) money increased since 1960, ODA % GNI decreased

Trade embargoes
A
- govt/int ban restricts trade w/particular country
- pol tool encourage change policies/ actions
- often response perceived threat int security/ force end HR abuses e.g. 1980s UN embargo oil+ military supplies SA pressurise govt end policy apartheid
- often put in place IGO’s (UN+EU)+ supported members

Military aid
A
- money, weapons, equipment/ expertise to developing countries help protect borders, fight terrorism, combat piracy or drug/ppl trafficking
- also given opposition groups fighting democracy vs authoritarian govt
- 2016 OECD changed definition overseas aid include some military spending 90% militant attacks countries weak govts+ poor HR records (+effect econ development) controversial charities believe reduced money spent= reduced poverty
- e.g. US largest military aid over 150 countries/ yr 2014 gave $1.4bn Egypt partly to fight ISIS
