EPOC Flashcards
EPOC
Excess post- exercise oxygen consumption
Excess post- exercise oxygen consumption
The volume of oxygen consumed post exercise to return body to a pre exercise state
Takes place in 2 stages
2 stages
Fast/ Alactacid (First and fast)
Slow/ Lactacid (Slow and last)
Fast/ Alactacid (First and fast)
What?
-Up to 3 mins (10% of EPOC)
-Replenish ATP and PC stores (50% in 30 secs)
-Replenish blood and muscle oxygen (resaturate haemoglobin and myoglobin)
Fast/ Alactacid (First and fast)
How?
-1-4 litres of oxygen required
-Increased ventilation of oxygen and circulation of blood contain oxygen
-Use of aerobic system for endothermic energy production
Slow/ Lactacid (Slow and last)
What?
-Replenish glycogen/ glucose stores
-Remove lactic acid
-60% of lactic acid is converted to pyruvic acid
Slow/ Lactacid (Slow and last)
How?
5-8 litres of oxygen required
-Increased ventilation of oxygen and circulation of blood containing oxygen
-Increased body temperature
-Increased removal of lactic acid/CO2
Strategies to help recovery (EPOC)
-WARM up/ cool down
-Tactics- slow tempo of game, use set plays, fake injuries
-Time outs/ substitutions
-High levels of aerobic/ anaerobic fitness
-Natural breaks, half- time, stoppages in game
-Colling aids
