Epilepsy Drugs Flashcards
First line drug for simple partial seizures
Carbamazepine
First line drug for complex partial seizures
Carbamazepine
First line drugs for tonic clonic seizures
Phenytoin, carbamazepine, valproic acid
First line drug for absence seizures
Ethosuximide
First line drug for acute status epilepticus
Benzodiazepines (diazepam or lorazepam)
First line prophylaxis for status epilepticus
Phenyotin
First line drug for trigeminal neuralgia
Carbamazepine
Epileptic drug used as migraine prophylaxis
Topiramate
MOA of phenytoin
Increases Na channel inactivation
MOA of carbamazepine
Increases Na channel inactivation
MOA of lamotrigine
Blocks voltage gated Na channels
MOA of gabapentin
Designed as GABA analog, but primarily inhibits high-voltage activated Ca channels
MOA of topiramate
Blocks Na channels, increases GABA action
MOA of phenobarbital
Increases GABAa action
MOA of valproic acid
Increases Na channel inactivation, increases GABA concentration
MOA of ethosuximide
Blocks thalamic T-type Ca channels
MOA of benzodiazepines
Increases GABAa action
MOA of tigabine
Inhibits GABA reuptake
MOA of vigabatrin
Irreversibly inhibits GABA transaminase which increases GABA
Alternative use for gabapentin other than seizures
Peripheral neuropathy and postherpetic neuralgia
Anti-epileptic that an also be used for seizures of eclampsia
Benzodiazepines
Anti-epileptic drugs that can cause Stevens-Johnson syndrome
Carbamazepine, ethosuximide, phenytoin, lamotrigine
Main side effects of carbamazepine
Diplopia, ataxia, blood dyscrasias (agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia), liver toxicity
Main side effects of phenytoin
Gingival hyperplasia, hirsutism, teratogenesis, SLE-like syndrome
Main side effects of gabapentin
Sedation, ataxia
Main side effects of topiramate
Sedation, mental dulling, kidney stones, weight loss
