Enzymes Flashcards
Enzymes are biological catalysts
they speed up the reactions in living things
Enzymes break down
food molecules into smaller molecules via a chemical reaction (so they can be absorbed in the small intestine)
Substrate
fits into the active site of Enzyme, only if it has a compelentary shape. The reaction happens, the product is used, Enzymes are then re-used
Amylase
Enzyme, made in the salivary glands, pancreas and small intestine. Works in mouth and small intestine. Substrate is starch, products are sugars.
Protease
Enzyme, made in the stomach, pancreas and small intestine. Works in stomach and small intestine. Substrate is Protein, Products are Amino acids
Lipase
Enzyme, made in Pancreas and small intestine. Works in the small intestine. Substrate is Fats, product is Fatty acids and glycerol.
Enzymes are found
in the salivary glands, pancreas and small intestine
Things that affect the speed of an enzyme controlled reaction…
Temperature, pH, concentration (of substrate)
Independent variable
Thing you change, on x-axis
dependant variable
Thing you measure, on y-axis
