Monologue
a lengthy speech by one character , addressed to other characters
Sonnet
a 14 line lyric poem written in rhymed iambic pentameter . Consists of 3 stanzas with 4 lines(quatrains) and a final 2 lines that rhyme(couplet). Each stanza explores a different aspect of poems theme, and the final 2 lines present a concluding comment
Soliloquy
a lengthy speech in which a character-usually alone on stage-expresses his or her true feelings
Iambic perimeter
the construction of a line of poetry with 5 sets of unstressed syllables followed by stressed syllables
Metaphor
a figure of speech that compares two apparent unlikely things without using the words like or as
Oxymoron
a figure of speech that compares contradictory or opposing ideas
Pun
a play on words involving either one word that has two different meanings or two words that sound alike but have different meanings
Dramatic irony
a situation in which the audience has vital information that one or more character onstage are lacking(and therefore making mistakes)
Tragic flaw
a personality deflect that contributes to the heros choices and therefore his or her tragic downfall
