Autonomous region
A country that contains more than one nation
Multinational state
When a nation has a state of its own but stretches across borders of other states
Multistate nation
A group of people who have certain things in common
ex.common heritage,beliefs,homelands
Nation
A nation full of people who fulfill the qualifications for a state
ex. Iceland, Japan
Nation-state
A state that has a degree but not complete self rule
Semi autonomous region
The power of a political unit or government, to rule over its own affairs
Sovereignty
The largest political unit, the formal term for a country
State
A cultural group that has no independent political entity
Stateless nation
Also called the Congo conference, uses claims to form state boundary’s in Africa

A type of imperialism in which people move and settle on the land of another country
Colonialism
A period of diplomatic,political, and military rivalry between the US and the union of Soviet Socialist(USSR/old Russia)

The undoing of colonization, in which indigenous people reclaim sovereignty over their territory
Decolonization
The process in which one or more regions are given increased autonomy by the central political unit
Devolution
A broader concept that includes a variety of ways of influence over another country or group of people by conquest
Imperialism
A nations desire to create and maintain a state of its own
Nationalism
Organized mass killing, in which people are targeted because of their race,religion,ethnicity, or nationality
Genocide
The study of the effects of geography on politics and relationships among states
Geopolitics
The right to chose your own sovereign government without external influence
Self-determination
A state dominated by another politically and economically
Satellite states
The willingness by a person or a group of people to defend a space they claim
Territoriality
In this system economic,political, or even cultural control is indirectly exerted over developing countries
Neocolonialism
A place of physical congestion between wider regions of movement and interaction
Choke point
A boundary established before a large population was present
Ex. Pyrenees mountains between Spain and France
Antecedent boundary
A type of subsequent boundary that takes into account existing culture or physical landscape
Consequent boundary
Boundaries that divide people according to some cultural division such as language, religion, or ethnicity
Cultural boundaries
A border that is drawn taking into account language, ethnicity, or other cultural traits
Cultural consequent boundary
Something related to a cultural phenomena
Ethnographic
A straight like or arc drawn by people that does not closely follow any physical features
ex. 49th parallel in between USA and Canada
Geometric boundary
States without territory connected to an ocean
Landlocked states
A boundary that is heavily guarded and discourages crossing
Militarized boundary
A boundary that is unguarded and people can cross it easily with little or no political interaction
Open boundary
Barriers between areas such as oceans,desserts, and mountains
Physical consequent boundary
A division that uses already existing natural features that divide a territory such as rivers, mountains, or deserts
Physical geographic boundaries
A boundary drawn to accommodate religious,ethnic,linguist, or economic differences. Also called ethnographic
Subsequent boundary
A boundary that no longer exists but is still evident on the landscape
Ex. East and West Germany(Now one state)

A boundary drawn by outside powers
Ex. Mali and Mauritania, and Africa
