1.2-1.4 Flashcards
The way a phenomenon is spread out over a specific area
Distribution
When phenomena are arranged in a group or a concentrated area such as restaurants in a food court at the mall or clusters of cities along the border of USA and mexico
Clustered distribution
When phenomena are arranged in a straight line, such as distribution of towns along a railroad line
Linear distribution
When phenomena are spread out over a large area, such as the distribution of large malls in a city
Dispersed distribution
When phenomena are equally spaced from the central point, such as the division of homes of people who’s shop in a specific area
Circular distribution
When phenomena are in a regular arrangement, such as the squares or blocks formed by roads in the midwest
Geometric distribution
When phenomena appear to have no order to their position, such as the distribution of pet owners in a city
Random distribution
The task of defining and describing a landscape
Landscape analysis
The act of physically visiting a location
Field observation
Information that can be tied to a specific place
Spatial data
Gathering information from satellites that orbit the earth or other crafts above the atmosphere
Remote sensing
Professional images captured by planes within the atmosphere
Aerie photography
Observing or recording information on field/at the location
Fieldwork
A 2d or 3d map that allows people to skillfully zoom in or out to see data I’m ways that were previously impossible
Geovisualizations
A system that determines the precise position of something on earth through a series of satellite tracking stations and receivers
GPS
Integrated computer programs for handling and analyzing data that is specifically referenced to earth’s surface
GIS
An approach that considers the arrangement of a phenomenon being studied across earth
Spatial approach
The area between two or more things
Space
Where specific phenomena are located either on a grid system or relative to somewhere else
Location
The specific human and physical characteristics of a location
Place
A group of places in the same area that share a characteristic
Region
The characteristics at the immediate location
Site
The location of a place relative to its surroundings and its connectivity to other places
Situation
How humans perceive a place in different ways based on their personal beliefs
Sense of place
The shrinking of “time distance” improved methods of transportation and communication
Time space compression
The contact, movement, or flow of things between locations
Spatial interaction
The patterns and movements of ideas, people, products, and other phenomena
Flow
The idea that when things are further apart they tend to be less connected
Friction of distance
The general arrangement of things being studied
Patterns
The way a phenomena is spread out, or arranged over an area to describe patterns
Distribution
Matching patterns of distribution
Spatial association
