Engine / Truck Company Operations Flashcards
The acronym for SLICERS….
S - Size-up at least 3 sides L - Locate the fire I - Identify the flow path C - Cool from a safe location E - Extinguish the fire R - Rescue S - Salvage
The primary purpose of a fire engine
Deliver the primary firefighting agent (water), a means to deliver it (pump and hose), as well as the personnel to apply it properly to the fire ground
When can the R and the S of SLICERS be used?
At any time in during fire operations
What is the objective of staging?
To provide a standard system for responding units that are not first in and which have not been given an assignment
When is Level 1 staging used?
Automatically in effect when 3 or more units
In Level 1 staging, where do units stage if they are not at the scene?
Approx one block away facing the direction of the sceneee
When is Level 2 staging used?
When additional units are called to the scene to support a large incident
Where do units stage for Level 2 Staging?
Where ever a Staging Area has been established
If a staging area has not been established where should all incoming units stage?
Utilize Level 1 staging procedures
Incident Priorities
- Life Safety
- Incident Stabilization
- Property Conservation
How much water do most TFD Engines carry?
750 gallons
Definition of Fire Confinement Tactics
Actions taken to confine a fire to a given area of present involvement by preventing the spread of the fire into any uninvolved area
Definition of Fire Extinguishing Tactics
Actions taken following fire confinement to extinguish a fire by removing the fuel, air supply, or most commonly, heat
What is the max GPM that can be flowed through a 1 3/4” hose?
200 GPM
What is a backup line?
To protect egress for the initial attack crew, and to provide additional fire flow if they get overwhelmed
-They are not to be used for exposure protection or to attack the fire from a different position
An additional line to assist with fire attack is called what?
A 2nd line …..or 3rd, 4th, etc
What are the three different types of master streams?
Fixed (deck guns)
Portable (monitors)
Elevated (operated from ariel apparatus)
Different sizes of smooth bore nozzle tips on a master stream and their GPM
1 1/4” 400 2” 1100
1 3/8” 500 2 1/4” 1350
1 1/2” 600 Fog Hog 800 - 1200
1 3/4” 800
5” hose can be pumped to what PSI?
180 PSI
Advantage of a smooth bore nozzle?
Better distance and penetration than a fog nozzle
What nozzle type should be used for exposures?
A fog unless it won’t reach, then use a smooth bore
Definition of an Automatic Sprinkler System
An arrangement of piping, valves, and water discharge heads designed to detect a fire and to operate to confine and/or control the fire
Definition of Standpipe System
An arrangement of piping, valves, and discharge hose connections strategically placed in a structure to provide an effective and reliable water supply for fire suppression teams
If there are dual connections for a standpipe and a sprinkler system which should be connected to first?
The sprinkler connection
A dry standpipe system is supplied how?
From FD engines through street connections. When a dry standpipe system is charged all floor outlets should be checked as soon as possible to prevent water flow through open valves
In combination protection systems, the fire pump of the system only has to provide enough pressure for what?
To supply the sprinkler system
What is the main role of Ladders?
Support Role
-supports the engine in fire suppression
Typically how tall is each floor in a residential house?
In a commercial building?
10’
12’
How much reach length does a ladder lose with proper placement?
6%
What is Overhaul?
Actions taken to expose hidden fire and assure complete extinguishment. The principles of overhaul includes total extinguishment of all smoldering fires and checking for and extinguishing all hidden fires and extension
Definition of Search and Rescue
A systematic process used to locate, protect, and remove occupants and fire victims from a structure to a place of safety
The Rescue Order
- Most severely threatened
- Largest number (group)
- Remainder of the fire area
- All other exposed areas
Definition of a Primary Search
a RAPID search of all areas that can be safely entered with the intent to find and remove any victims
What is the benchmark for the primary search?
“Primary Search All Clear”
What is the definition of a Secondary Search?
a THOROUGH search of the entire fire area after the “Under Control”. Speed is not the objective and ventilation and interior lighting should be considered to assist in this search
What is the benchmark of the secondary search?
“Secondary Search All Clear”
