Endocrine System Flashcards
Pituitary anterior: Growth Hormone (STH)
Stimulates growth of bone and muscle
Pituitary anterior: Adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH)
Stimulates the adrenal cortex to secrete cortin
Pituitary anterior: Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
Stimulates thyroid to secrete thyroxin
Pituitary anterior: Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Stimulates development of follicles in ovaries and sperm in testes
Pituitary anterior: Luteinizing hormone (LH)
Stimulates the development of corpus luteum in ovaries and secretion of testosterone by testes
Pituitary anterior: lactogenic hormone (prolactin)
Stimulates mammary glands to secrete milk
Pituitary posterior: oxytocin
Stimulates contraction of uterus
Pituitary posterior: vasopressin
Affects contraction of arterial walls and rate of water reabsorption by kidneys
Thymus gland
- irregular shape
- located in mediastinum, superior to heart
- prominent in infants and young children
- atrophy results with age
-Thymosin: stimulates the production of white blood cells (immunity)
Pineal gland
- part of diencephalon, small in size
- composed of neurons and neuroglia
- functions is in doubt: may regulate rhythms
- melatonin: thought to inhibit secretion of FSH, LH
- important in birds and reptiles, sensitive to light, regulates cycles
