infection of the endocardium
usually on the valves
what is endocarditis caused by?

many organisms implicated
how can dental work cause endocarditis?
oral bacteria (streptococci) implicated
what are the 4 stages of infective endocarditis?
- bacterial entry
- bacterial adherence to damaged endothelium and microthrombi
- bacterial proliferation, neutrophil and macrophage infiltration
- vegetation formation
what are the signs/symptoms of endocarditis?
fever heart murmur emolic phenomena skin manifestations splenomegaly septic complications mycotic aneurysm
what are the effects of endocarditis?
prolonged antibiotics
cardiac valve damage- dysfunction
which cardiac px are not a risk?

implanted pacemaker/defib
what dental procedures are a risk?
procedures involving manipulation of the dento-gingival junction and causing bacteraemia
- extractions
- perio therapy
- gingival surgery
- implants
- rest. with matrix
what should the dentist do for risk px?
identify them
prevention of oral disease
OHI
possible antibiotic prophylaxis
what is the biggest risk factor for endocarditis?
past endocarditis
