Endocarditis Flashcards
1
Q
Name the 4 types of endocarditis
A
Infective, Rheumatic, Nonbacterial thrombotic, Libman-Sacks
2
Q
Discuss the vegetations of infective endocarditis
A
Can cause Ring abscesses
3
Q
Physical exam of endocarditis
A
A new murmur
4
Q
What is the most common organism in Acute Native Valve endocarditis?
A
Staph Aureus
5
Q
What is the most common organism in SubAcute Native Valve endocarditis?
A
Strep viridans
6
Q
What is the most common organism in Prosthetic Valve Endocarditis?
A
Staph epidermidis (Coagulase negative)
7
Q
What is the most common organism in Intravenous Drug endocarditis?
A
Staph Aureus
8
Q
Discuss Rheumatic Endocarditis
A
- Fusion of valve commisures
- Antibodies against M protein
- May cause pancarditis
9
Q
Discuss Pancarditis
A
- Foci of inflammatory cells and large macrophages (Caterpillar cells)
- Bread and butter pericarditis (Fibrinous)
- McCallum plaques: Irregular areas of thickening of LA endocardium
10
Q
Discuss Nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis
A
- Sterile thrombi on leaflets of valves
- NO ILLICIT INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE
- Usually multiple along lines of valve closure
- No microorganisms histologically
11
Q
Discuss Libman-Sacks Disease
A
- Fibrinous material contains hematoxylin bodies
- Can form on either surface of the valve
- ONLY IN SLE pts
