Emotional Intelligence
A form of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and action
Perceiving emotions in oneself and others
Refers to recognizing the verbal and nonverbal communication cues of others
Using emotions to facilitate thinking
Refers to the ability to generate emotions and react to them
Understanding emotional meaning
Refers to the ability to understand and appropriately react to others’ emotions
Managing emotions
Refers to the ability to regulate your emotions and react to others’ emotions in a manner that effectively manages an interaction
Self-regulation
Refers to the ability to control your own emotions. As a leader, the expectation is that you use your awareness of self to recognize when you are in an emotionally charged state, and you chose to manage your emotions for effective outcomes
Self-awareness
Refers to the ability to understand how you react emotionally to a myriad of situations. As a leader, the expectation is that you use this self-awareness to recognize your contributions to the interpersonal dynamics of you and your colleagues
Motivation
Refers to a person’s commitment to excel
Empathy
Refers to the ability to leverage your self-awareness to accept and legitimize another person’s emotions. As a leader, this is a critical skill with respect to being able to coach and guide diverse employees
Social skills
Refers to the ability to build rapport with others. As a leader, this social intelligence allows you to understand the impact of your behavior on the behavior of others
