Emotion Flashcards
Where are the emotions stored?
-
Lymbic system: is the part of our brain that is responsible for storage retrieval and memory.
- Hippo wearing a HAT ( hypothalamus, amygdala, thalamus, and hippocampus)
- Thalamus: the relay station, where all the sensory information is processed before going to the appropriate area of the brain. For everything except for the smell.
-
Amygdala: the area of aggression, if you stimulate it you become more aggressive if you destroy it you become very mellow
- Kluver -Bucy syndrome: bi-lateral destruction of the amygdala can cause someone to put things in their mouth a lot like a baby or become extremely hypersexual
- Hippocampus: is an important aspect of converting new memories into long-term memories, when destroyed you will still have the old memories that you have but you won’t be able to make new ones.
- Hypothalamus: part of limbic system controls the ANS ( fight or flight and endocrine system.
Describe the role of he cerebral hemisphere and the prefrontal cortex in emotion
-
Cerebral cortex: in terms of emotion our emotion on the prefrental cortex is divided based on right and left side
- happy people had more activity on left side
- depress people had more activity on right side
-
Prefrontal cortex: is the reason why we are humans
- executive control: how we solve problems
What does the autonomic nervous system play in emotion?
- involved in the physiological aspect of emotion. (lie dector is so prominent because of it )
- Two branches
- sympathetic: fight or flight -deals with anything that creates arousal ( dilation of pupils, lower salivation, increase respiration, heart rate, release of glucose, release of adrelanine low digestion)
- parasympathetic: rest or digest -deal with anything that decrease arousal and promotes rest for digestion
What are three components of emotions
Emotions are said to come with three parts: physiological, cognitive, and behaviour changes
- Physiological component: increase heart rate, muscle tension etc…
- Cognitive: can be different from person to person and can include how a person perceives a situation
- Behavioural: emotion may bring about behaviors
Emotions are temporary can be negative or positive and differ in intensity
What are the Paul Ekman 6 universal emotions?
- Happiness
- Sadness
- Fear
- Disgust
- Anger
- and Suprise
These six are consistent throughout the world.
What is Darwin’s hypothesis of emotion?
He mentioned that the ability to understand emotion is an innate ability that allows people to better survive
What are the three theories of emotions ?
-
James lange theory: the physiological changes in your body creates the emotions
- You don’t cry because you are sad, you are sad because you cry
- Cannon-Bard theory: disagree with James and said that both emotional and theological reactions happened together
- Schachter-singer: our meaning of the situation and the physiological response are responsible for forming the emotion.
What was Lazarus theory of emotions?
- The emotions depend on how the situation is viewed/ label
- labelling is based on cultures - your interpretation of what happens to lead to what you feel ***
What is the Yerkes-Dodson Law?
People tend to perform GREAT when they are slightly aroused, if you are not really stimulated to tend to perform mediocrity.
