- culture is adaptative, and evolve over time

What is subculture vs. counterculture?

Subculture: smaller than a nation but large enough to support people through a lifespan. Smaller community that differs itself from the larger society.
- mexicans or orthodox jews
- Microculture: only affect limited period of one’s life, include groups and organizations.
- Counterculture: values differing greatly from larger society

Culture lag and culture shock?
A
- Culture lag: culture takes time to catch up with technological innovations and result in social problems
- Material culture: refers to technological aspect of our daily lives ( foods etc)
- Non-material culture: are not physical objects, like believes that stay for a longtime
- Culture shock: when people feeldisorriented when they encounter unfamiliar practices

- when there is a spread of invention or discovery that is s[read from one place to another

What is mass media?
A
- how information is transmitted within a culture
- Functionalist perspective: helps entertain us which helps with socialization
- Conflict theory perspective: media can help increase the division within a society, also mass media reflects the dominant ideology. - Tokesim: they can portray stereotypes within a culture.
- Feminist Theory: reflect the dominant ideology of how women are represented in media as sex symbols
- Interactionist perspective: look at how mass media interact with the day to day lives of people

What is the evolution and human cutures?
A
- Culture is the customs and behaviors learned and socially transmitted.
- Darwin theory of evolution: both physical traits and behaviours can be selected for if they contribute to the success of the species.
- Evolution: can shape culture but can also think of how culture can shape human evolution. Lactose intolerant traits creates a culture of lactose free.
