(ecology) Flashcards
What is ecology
The study of the relationships between living things to one another and to their surroundings
What is an ecosystem
A habitat such as a forest and the community of all the living things inside the forest. There are interdependent populations of species that interact constantly with each other to survive
How is biomass lost between trophic levels
Through respiration, faeces and urine
What is an abiotic factor (in relation to populations in a habitat)?
Due to non-living/ non-biological factors
Eg
Shade from a hill/mountain (plants)
Temperature (North Pole)
Wind speed
What is a biotic factor (in relation to populations in a habitat)?
Due to other living things
Eg
Competition for resources (light)
Wind speed (trees breaking the wind in a wood)
