incidents of controlling, coercive, or threatening behaviour, violence, or abuse between those aged 16 years or over who are, or have been, intimate partners or family messengers regardless of gender or sexuality.

what is psychological abuse?
attempts to instil fear and isolate the victim.
- intimidating gestures
- threatening physical harm to self/ victim and/ or others
- withholding access to phone and/ or transport
what is emotional abuse?
attempts to undermine the victims self-worth
- constant criticism
- nae calling
- insults
- belittling victims ability and competency
- silent treatment

male, female, children in domestic setting
most commonly wives, girlfriend, daughter
women at greater risk: ages 16- 24 years, separated and divorced, lone parents, disabled, low income
males can be victims but researches suggest less likely
who are the offenders of domestic abuse/ violence?
typically men- sometimes women
what is the public awareness of domestic abuse/ violence?
overall low- in the home, so easy to conceal
victims are often afraid to report the crime or think that it is a one off or isn’t that bad
police view it as ‘ only a domestic’, thought of a private matter, however they are trained to take it seriously
