a population distinguishable from another type of the same species by frequencies of genes, chromosomal variation, or hereditary phenotypic charicteristics
how do we determine dog breed origins
-based on DNA study using 96 microsatellites on 414 dogs of 85 breeds
-only 14 microsatellites could distinguish everything else was the same
what dogs were the most different from the rest and closest to the wolf
-Asian spitzes were most distinct from other
-therefore the “oldest”
why is there so much diversity within the herding group
-herding dogs have been derived many times separately (thousands of years ago)
-one of the original uses of dogs
