Directives/Orders Flashcards
If a boss, not in your chain of command, orders you to do something, you should
DO IT! *IF you can confer with you boss first, then do so
When dealing with an incompetent subordinate you may have to
engage in autocratic methods to get the job done
Unity of Command means
subordinate receives direct orders from ONE boss
Most orders should be framed as
REQUESTS.
A boss is NOT providing direction if he almost always uses
IMPLIED/SUGGESTIVE orders. Implied orders are OK under certain circumunstances
The concept of UNITY OF COMMAND can be violated when
you observe a member of another unit violating a SAFETY RULE
A DIRECT command should be used when you observe a subordinate violating
a SAFETY RULE
If a subordinate refuses an order to perform a certain task, you should
find out WHY
When your boss gives you a job to do, you should
CLARIFY the assignment
Police officer receives multiple orders, involving the same problem, he should
follow the last order given.
To be sure a subordinate understands your orders, he should
repeat the orders in his own words
If a high-ranking boss gives orders directly to a police officer, the authority of supervisors in the chain of command is
weakened
When subordinate questions what has been told to do and suggests another way to do it that will not work, you should
explain to him the reason why his way will not work.
Written orders facilitate
systemic follow-up and provide a basis for attaching accountability for failures
Do not give an implied order to an INEXPERIENCED subordinate, unless you are trying to
develop him.
