Diltiazem
Brand Name
Cardizem
Diltiazem
Class
-calcium channel blocker
-antidysrhythmic
Diltiazem

Diltiazem
Mechanism of Action
-slows extracellular calcium ion influx across myocardial cell membranes
-slows conduction through sinoatrial node and atrioventricular node
-slows ventricular conduction rates in atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter
Diltiazem
Indications
-atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular rate
-atrial flutter with rapid ventricular rate
-supraventricular tachycardia second-line to administration of adenosine
Diltiazem
Contraindications
-known hypersensitivity
-hypotension
-myocardial infarction
-cardiogenic shock
-ventricular tachycardia
- second-degree and third-degree heart block

Diltiazem
Onset
2-5 minutes
Diltiazem
Adult Dose
0.25 mg/kg (usually 20 mg) over 2 minutes
may repeat at 0.35 mg/kg (usally 25 mg) in 15 minutes
Diltiazem
Adult Dose
Infusion
5.0 to 15 mg/hour
Diltiazem
Special Considerations
