Diabetes Flashcards
What are the causes of type 1 diabetes?
Autoimmune disease or viral infection
What happens to the beta cells in type 1?
They are destroyed so are unable to produce insulin at all
What are the causes of type 2 diabetes?
Obesity, hypertension, poor lifestyle, diet, ethnicity and age
What happens to the beta cells in type 2 diabetes?
The number of cells are reduced meaning not enough insulin produced or reduced pancreas tissue sensitivity due to body fat
What is the role of alpha cells?
Secrete glucagon to increase blood glucose
What is the role of beta cells?
Secrete insulin to reduce blood sugar levels
What is the role of delta cells?
Secrete somatostatin and gastrin to regulate alpha and beta cells by suppressing glucagon and insulin secretion
What is the role of the acini cells?
Secrete digestive enzymes into the duodenum
How is Type 1 regulated?
Injections of insulin, checking blood sugar levels regularly
How is type 2 regulated?
Lifestyle changes and insulin tablets
