Kübler-Ross stages of dying

Communication with a dying person
Ask if there is anyone he or she would like to see. Encourage the dying person to reminiscence. Talk to individual When he or she wishes to talk. Don’t be afraid to express love
- establish presence at their eye level
- Don’t be afraid to touch dying person
- Eliminate distraction
- Don’t prescribe or deny feelings of acceptance
- Allow and encourage expression of feelings
Benefits of expecting death
close life with own ideas, complete projects, arrange funeral, opportunity to reminisce, understand medical processes

- Shock and disbelief- time frame varies, survivor feels lost and confused, physical symptoms, initial numbness shifts to overwhelming feelings of sadness
- Preoccupation with the memory of the dead person- 6 months, physical symptoms like crying and insomnia, widowed individuals relive death or relationship
- Resolution- renewed interest in everyday activities, realization that life must go on, memories persist but change
