CV - shock and infection Flashcards
what is shock? what can it progress to?
- when the CV fails to perfuse tissues and leads to widespread impairment in cellular metabolism
- organ failure and death
what is MODS? what is it a serious complication of? what is uncontrolled?
- multiple organ dysfunciton syndrome
- failure of two or more organs after severe illness and injury
- serious complication of schock
- uncontrolled inflammatory and stress response
what is the most common type of shock? what is the least common ?
- most common is hypovolemic
- least common is cardiogenic
what are the three consequences of shock?
impaired oxygen, impaired glucose, impaired cellular metabolism
what are the consequences of impair oxygen?
shift from aerobic to anaerobic metabolism
what are the consequences of impaired glucose?
- because of impaired delivery of glucose or uptake by the cell
- muscle wasting for energy
what is the consequence of impaired cellular metabolism?
- waste products and cellular toxicity which lead to irreversible shock
what are the subjective manifestations of shock?
weak, cold or hot, nauseated, dizzy, thirsty, short of breath
what are the objective manifestations of shock?
hypotension, increased resp rate, increased pulses, pulses may be weak or thready, altered temp, cyanosis or pallor, alkalosis
what is cardiogenic shock?
- decreased cardiac output
- tissue hypoxia
- adequate intravascular volume
what is hypovolemic shock?
loss of whole blood, plasma, or interstitial fluid
what is neurogenic shock
massive and widespread vasodilation due to imbalances in parasympathetic and sympathetic smooth muscle
what is anaphylactic shock a result of? what does it cause?
- result of anaphylaxis
- causes vasodilation and relative hypovolemia
what is sepsis?
body’s extreme response to an infection or illness
what is the progression of septic shock?
bacteremia–> sepsis –> septic shock –> MODS
