CV - diseases of the veins Flashcards
what are varicose veins?
when blood pools inside a vein and makes it palpable and tortuous
in what veins do varicose veins usually occur in?
- in the saphenous veins
what are two possible causes of varicose veins?
- disease or injury that damages one or more valves in the vein
- gradual distention of the vein
why would a damage valve lead to varicose veins?
- valves keep the blood flowing in one direction
- a valve is damaged and blood pools, the pressure and volume increases within the vessel
- the surrounding tissues become edematous became plasma seeps to the tissue
what can varicose veins progress to long term? what is this disorder?
- chronic venous insufficiency
- long term inadequate venous return to the heart
what is the major complication of chronic venous insufficiency?
- poor circulation makes the veins susceptible to trauma and infection
- can form venous stasis ulcer
what are the risk factors of varicose veins?
age, female gender, family history of varicose veins, obesity, pregnancy, peep vein thrombosis, past issue with varicose veins and past leg injury
what is deep vein thrombosis (DVT)?
obstruction to blood flow because of a thrombus that increases venous pressure
what are three factors that promote DVT?
- venous stasis
- venous endothelial damage
- hypercoagulable states
what are the signs and symptoms of DVT?
pain, redness, swelling
what are the risk factors for deep vein thrombosis (DVT)?
cancer, orthopedic surgery, immobility, heart failure
