CV - coronary artery disease Flashcards
1
Q
what is myocardial ischemia? what happens to the cells?
A
- a state where the cells are temporarily deprived of blood supply
- the cells remain alive but cant function normally
2
Q
what does persistent ischemia cause?
A
- causes the acute coronary syndromes
3
Q
what does coronary artery disease diminish? what does this impair? what will this lead to?
A
- diminishes blood supply
- impairs myocardial metabolism
- leads to myocardial ischemia
4
Q
what is myocardial infarction?
A
- when prolonged depleted blood supply to the heart causes infarction with myocyte necrosis
5
Q
what are the two types of infarction?
A
subendocardial or transmural
6
Q
what is the difference between subendocardial and transmural infarction?
A
- when the thrombus disintegrates before complete tissue necrosis it only affects the endocardium
- if the thrombus is stuck in the blood vessel then there is tissue necrosis that extends through the myocaridum from the endocardium to the epicardium
7
Q
what are the clinical manifestations of myocardial infarction?
A
sudden severe chest pain, pain that radiates to jaw, arm and neck, nausea and vomiting, indigestion, complications in the GI tract
