CUE - Urbanisation: Suburbanisation Flashcards
2 negative impacts of suburbanisation
Increasing social segregation within cities
Funding is diverted away from inner cities
What originally caused suburbanisation in the UK?
People wanted to escape from the decline, pollution and stress of inner city areas and wanted to move out.
What 2 things facilitated suburbanisation?
The growth of public transport.
New roads increased car ownership, allowing wealthier people to commute to work from their new homes.
Describe suburbanisation in the 1930s
Not many planning controls so urban growth occurred along main roads. This caused urban sprawl.
Describe suburbanisation in the 1940s
Growth caused concern, leading to establishments of protected areas called Green Belts to control further developments.
Describe suburbanisation from the 1950s onwards
Suburbanisation has increased and been better planned.
Describe suburbanisation in the 1950s and 1960s
Large scale construction of council housing estates in the suburbs on Greenfield sites (some became known as sink estates).
Describe suburbanisation in the 1970s
Increasing home ownership leading to private housing estates on the rural urban fringe, again on Greenfield sites. Residents had more land for garages and gardens. Residents had cleaner air and access to open space and rural areas.
Describe suburbanisation from the 1980s onwards
New housing estates have been built in suburban areas with local shopping parades, out of town retail parks, leisure parks and schools. This is because the suburbs are perceived as relatively crime-free environments with benefits of the rural urban fringe: woodlands, parks, golf courses. Green Belt land has been under increasing threat over time.
What are the characteristics of the suburbs?

Supermarket, business parks, convenient stores,
Cafes, parks, schools, churches, pubs
Detached housing with bigger gardens
