How do temperature inversions occur?
When a warm less dense air mass moves over a dense, cold air mass. E.g if cold air flows from mountain peaks down into valleys, cold air pushes under warm air. If air near the ground rapidly loses its heat on a clear night and ground becomes cooled quickly while air above retains heat the ground was holding during the day. Upwelling cold water can decrease surface air temp and cold air mass stays under warmer ones.
