space vs place
space - somewhere with a geographical location but no subjective meaning
place- somewhere with a geographical meaning and a subjective meaning.
what is emotional attachment and how can this change how they act?
when someone has a deeper connection with a place e.g lived there a long time.
may act differently:
- respect place
- spend more money
- involvement
- revisit
insider vs outsider
insider- someone who spends a lot of time in a place and is familiar with it
perception and factors affecting it
how someone views a place (their subjective view)
- religion - e.g christianโs feel welcome in a church
- age - older ppl feel unsafe in cities
- gender - women feel out of place at football match
- ethnicity - small sections of cities with same ethnicity
- role - teachers see school as place of work, students to learn
- sexuality - LGBT+ may feel more comfortable in cities like Brighton
globalisation
increasing interconnectedness of worlds economy, cultural, and political system
time space compression
metaphorical idea of world getting smaller bc of developments in technology and transport
global village
everywhere being more connected and familiar e.g more TNCS
clone town
idea that every town is the same (all have same shops, restaurants etc)
placelessness
everywhere feeling the same. deindustrialisation making places feel abandoned
informal vs formal data
informal- subjective opinions, media, TV, books, music, photos
formal- objective information, stats, facts e.g census, crime data, house prices, population structure
how can globalisation influence sense of place?
stronger sense of place - global village so places are more familiar
new sense of place - more multicultural restaurants with new and exciting foods (due to migration)
clone towns - same TNCs in every town = placelessness
xenophobia - local ppl may no longer feel at home if migrants move there, may feel pushed out and start being xenophobic towards migrants
