Cranial Nerves Flashcards
CN 1 is known as the…
Olfactory Nerve
The sensory function of CN 1 is…
Olfaction (smell)
The cranial nerve which conducts olfactory (smell) sensations to brain and is the only type of nervous tissue to regenerate is…
CN 1
If there is damage to CN 1, what is most likely the consequence
Anosmia (partial or total loss of smell)
CN II is also known as…
Optic Nerve
The function of the CN II is…
Special sensory nerve of vision that is an outgrowth of the brain; more appropriately called a brain tract
The sensory function of CN II is…
Vision
The oculomotor nerve is which cranial nerve
CN III
The oculomotor nerve has two functions, somatic and parasympathetic motor. What is the description of each?
- Somatic motor function: Supplies four extrinsic eye muscles that move the eye
- Parasympathetic motor function: innervates sphincter pupillae muscle of iris to make pupil constrict and contracts ciliary muscles to make lens of eye more spherical.
Trochlear Nerve is which cranial nerve
CN IV
The somatic motor function of the trochlear nerve is…
Supplies one extrinsic eye muscle to move inferiorly and laterally
The trigeminal nerve is which cranial nerve
CN V
The two functions of CN V are Sensory and Somatic Motor. Describe each
-
Sensory: Sensory stimuli for this nerve are touch, temperature, and pain.
- V1: Conducts sensory impulses from the cornea, nose, forehead, anterior scalp, meninges
- V2: Conducts sensory impulses from nasal mucosa, palate, gums, cheek, meninges
- V3: Conducts sensory impulses from anterior two-thirds of tongue, meninges, skin of chin, lower jaw, lower teeth; one-third from sensory axons of auricle of ear
- Somatic Motor: Innervates muscles of mastication (temporalis, masseter, later and medial pterygoids) mylohyoid, anterior belly of digastric, tensor tympani muscle, and tensor veli palatini
This nerve consist of three divisions, opthalmic (V1), maxillary (V2) and mandibular (V3); recieves sensory impulses from face, oral cavity, nasal cavity, and anterior scalp. Also innervates muscles of mastication
CN V (trigeminal Nerve)
The abducens nerve is what cranial nerve?
