Chapter 9: Articulations Flashcards
A joint, or an articulation, is a point of contact between….
- bone and bone
- bone and teeth
- bone and cartilage
What are the three FUNCTIONAL catagories and their respective movement levels?
Synarthrosis: No movement
Amphiarthrosis: Little Movement
Diarthrosis: Free Movement
What are three major structural categories?
- Fibrous
- Carilaginous
- Synovial
What are two examples of Fibrous, Synarthosis articulations? Two examples of where these are found?
- Suture (Skull sutures…)
- Gomphosis (Teeth and their articulatons with either the mandible or maxilla)
What is a cartilagionous, synarthrosis? What is an example?
Synchondrosis
What is a fibrous, amphiarthrosis? An example?
Syndesmosis (radius and ulna)
What is a cartilagionous joint?
- A joint in which the articulating bones are attached together by some type of cartilage.
What are the two main cartlaginous articulations?
Synchondrosis
Symphysis
What cartilage type is present in Symphysis?
Symphysis are characterized by a pad of fibrocartilage between articulating bones.
What type of cartilage is characterisitc of synchondrosis?
Hylaine cartilage is characteristic of synchondrosis.
What is the structural category of diarthrosis?
Synovial
Three types of motion at a joint?
Linear (sliding or gliding)
Angular (angles of bones change in relation to each other)
Rotation (one bone can rotate against or within another)
What are examples of joints that consist of linear motion?
- Intertarsal joints
- Intercarpal joints
- Acromioclavicular joint
What are examples of angular motions?
- Flexion and Extension
- Abduction and Adduction
- Lateral Flexion
- Circumduction
Between the bodies of vertebrae are what type of articulations?
Symphysis (cartilaginous joints (fibrocartilage))
